Video: To Lighten the Mood a Bit…

Failblog = a great humor fix.

Poem: One Bullet

One Bullet

Brought
on scraped knees,
these bruised palms
strain for your fever.

And,
can you hear me
crashing through this
free fall prayer
of possession?

Listen closely

Please
let me flutter,
and let me fade
as your strained
and secret
struggle.

We both know
that the lessons
of my memory
never made
me whole.

I’m too riddled
with empty words
for sunflower fields
and a constant
spring.

So instead of
asking you
to play Jesus,
I’ll just say when
and leave one bullet
in the chamber.

Photos: My Crazy Furry Critters…

This is Sinatra (Sin for short).  An awesome cat… Sadly, I did not get to keep him when my fiancee and I split. :(

And this is my pride and joy: Sam.  He was a rescue from Animal Care & Control in South Florida.  He was on his last week there before they euthanized him.  He was a very, very broken creature when I adopted him.  It took a solid two years for me to be able to rehab him into the spoiled, overgrown lapdog he is now. :)

He’s far too smart for his own good (and mine).  I couldn’t have asked for a friendlier, more intelligent, and loyal creature than him.

RE: Public Opinion and Pot

I believe that marijuana – without a doubt – should be legalized. Legalized, taxed, and treated in the same manner as alcohol (i.e. illegal to drive under its influence, sold to minors, etc…).

The extra tax revenue would be a HUGE plus for the United States right now. Combine with the fact that we could also save taxpayer money by not throwing people in jail for possession.  It might be interesting to note that the current estimate of those serving time for marijuana offenses is approx 60,000.

Yes – if abused, pot can take over someone’s life – but then again, so can alcohol.

That’s why I believe that if it’s legalized, it should be treated in the same manner as alcohol.  DUI doesn’t imply alcohol only.  Driving under the influence is just that.  Impaired driving comes in many forms.  Hell, I’ve heard of people getting a DUI for being on cold medications.

Considering all that I’ve seen alcohol destroy in my own life, I still do not think it should be any less legal.  It does not imply that the rest of the population are or will become alcoholics simply because my parents were.

Combine that with the fact that it is also a more eco-friendly and renewable resource than say… petroleum or wood (i.e. in the form of hemp).  They can make cloth and paper made from it.  They’ve even developed a biodegradable plastic from it!

Despite it’s many uses, the United States does NOT differentiate between hemp and the actual drug marijuana – so BOTH are illegal to grow in the US.

Bottom Line: Tax the hell out of it and use it for something productive – i.e. the deficit.

Puzzles: A Classic Riddle (1)

WHAT AM I?

If you look, you can’t see me.
If you see me, you cannot see anything else.
I can make you walk if you can’t.
Sometimes I speak the truth.
And sometimes I lie.

What am I?

This is Crushing.

We are going to lose some of the most beautiful places on this planet because of global warming.

This article, first thing in the morning, certainly sets a somber tone.

Give Places To Go To Before Global Warming Ruins Them

We are turning THIS…

into THIS.

It always reminds me of that line from The Matrix where humans are compared to viruses- living off the host until all the natural resources are gone…

It’s very sad. :(

State Secrets Legislation Re-Introduced

Does anyone see this as a bad thing?

Sens. Specter, Leahy, Feingold, Whitehouse and Kennedy unveiled the 2009 version of their State Secrets Protection Act today. Its aim is to provide guidance to federal courts currently considering cases involving the ever-so-controversial State Secrets Privilege.

Ambinder goes on to explain further what’s involved in the legislation. It seems pretty reasonable on the face of it, Obviously I think it’d be better the fewer state secrets there were. There is a place and time for state secrets to be invoked, but that does not include cover up of illegal activity or personal embarrassment.

Oversight will help prevent the abuse of the invocation of State Secrets, and if the bill is kept narrowly tailored, I can’t see a problem with it, if nothing else, it’s closing the barn door after 8 years of state secrets abuse.

As an aside, Glenn Greenwald is having a conniption fit trying to call Obama a betrayer of the first order by invoking state secrets on a torture rendition case. At this point I’m giving Obama the benefit of the doubt on the issue, I think Obama has earned that trust, however if things continue down that path, I’ll quickly drop that whole trust thing.
