This is the Man that The Right is Vilifying

I mean, if you’re going to vilify the person who has tried his best to work to demonstrate a willingness for to talk, to work as a true moderate of his faith, then the reality is, aren’t listening to what he’s saying:

We are here to assert the Islamic conviction of the moral equivalency of our Abrahamic
faiths. If to be a Jew means to say with all one’s heart, mind and soul Shma` Yisrael, Adonai
Elohenu Adonai Ahad; hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One, not only today I am
a Jew, I have always been one, Mr. Pearl.

If to be a Christian is to love the Lord our God with all of my heart, mind and soul, and to
love for my fellow human being what I love for myself, then not only am I a Christian, but I
have always been one Mr. Pearl.

And I am here to inform you, with the full authority of the Quranic texts and the practice of
the Prophet Muhammad, that to say La ilaha illallah Muhammadun rasulullah is no different.
It expresses the same theological and ethical principles and values

In fact, I suspect that quite a few of the people who want to have an enemy, who doesn’t want Islam to moderate, who want to radicalize Christianity and make it a hateful, narrow, bigoted belief system. They’re not looking to do anything more than demonstrate their superiority by destroying anything like like them. They’re evil.

My Thoughts on the Cordoba House and the Republican Opposition

The question really comes down to, do the inmates run the asylum? The concept of the loyal opposition has been utterly trashed in a scorched earth war to demonize and dehumanize anyone who isn’t conservative enough. The entire mess isn’t recent as we know, think back to the quotes about ‘real america’ in the campaign. Then look back to the elections in 2002, 2004, in which people who weren’t pro war enough were trashed and treated as little better than traitors and un-American. Heck, even now there’s a significant minority of people who still believe that Iraq was behind the 9/11 attacks.

At this point, I’m no longer shocked that there’s this much vitriol coming from the Republican party. They know their base, they know their audience, they know exactly who they’re talking to. And it’s the worst of America that they’re pandering to, not the best. It makes me sad, and I despair to think that we’ve reached this point.

One final thought, I remember how much the conservatives would yell and disparage non-conservatives for being upset. It got to the point where the response was, ‘if you hate America so much, just leave’. But instead of taking their own advice and simply leaving, they aim to destroy the country by splitting it up. We can argue that the talk in TN and in TX is just hot air, but I think there’s a darker and stronger undercurrent to it. That there is an undercurrent of hatred that lurks towards those people who aren’t a part of the ‘real America.’

The outrage and Bigotry against the Muslim faith is merely a symptom of the disease that has eaten at the soul of the conservative movement.

Ann Rice, Converts (Again)

You know, at the rate she’s converting more often than some people buy new cars.

Anne Rice, the bestselling novelist most popularly known for “Interview with the Vampire” and her other creepy vampire novels, announced on Wednesday via Facebook that she has officially renounced Christianity. It’s a bold move for the author who has become well-known for her vehement religiosity; the majority of her frequent tweets are related to religion in some way

Don’t get me wrong, I think her sentiment is good and she has her reasons:

I refuse to be anti-gay. I refuse to be anti-feminist. I refuse to be anti-artificial birth control. I refuse to be anti-Democrat. I refuse to be anti-secular humanism. I refuse to be anti-science. I refuse to be anti-life.

I’ll try not to harsh on her too much for it, but man, my head hurts trying to figure out what Ann believes in, so I’m just going to stop trying

Nothing Like Laws to Impose a Religious Test to Hold Office

If you can’t beat em… find reasons to sue em!

The story about Asheville, N.C., city councilman Cecil Bothwell would be interesting enough without a legal angle. After all, it’s not often that you hear of an avowed atheist getting elected to public office in any part of the country, let alone the south.

But the legal angle makes the story even more interesting: that Bothwell’s atheism might actually violate the North Carolina constitution — a fact his opponents threatening to raise in a possible lawsuit.

Of course, the idea of any sort of religious test would fly in the face of the US constitution, but that doesn’t stop people from trying after all…

One opponent, H. K. Edgerton, is threatening to file suit against the city to challenge Mr. Bothwell’s swearing in. “My father was a Baptist minister,” Edgerton said. “I’m a Christian man. I have problems with people who don’t believe in God.”

Good to know that, now is it your god you want everyone to believe in, or just a supreme being of some sort. Are Hindu’s not good enough? would they pass your test? how about Muslims? they good enough, after all you ARE a good christian man, are you sure you wouldn’t have a problem with those people who believe in a god that isn’t yours?

He may really be a true believer, but I think this is more likely

Bothwell said a legal challenge to his appointment would be “fun,” but he believes that his opponents’ efforts have more to do with politics than religion.

“It’s local political opponents seeking to change the outcome of an election they lost,” he said.

Any Religion can Be Insane

If the people are extreme enough:

Over the weekend, 1500 ultra-Orthodox Jews massed outside a newly-opened Intel plant in Jerusalem in order to protest the chip maker being open on the Sabbath.

The ultra-Orthodox protest was not peaceful. Protesters broke in and ransacked parts of the factory, saving special vehemence for an on-site synagogue installed for Orthodox employees.

Intel had received multiple threats from different sectors of Israel’s wildly diverse ultra-Orthodox community beforehand. On Thursday, the chipmaker installed a barbed wire fence around the to-be-opened factory in preparation.

And then for the insult

While the masses of ultra-Orthodox rabbis prepared their flocks for protests, the same rabbis quietly gave permission for their female parishoners to work at Intel during the non-Sabbath week. Women needing permission to work in 2009?

I wasn’t aware that women needed permission to work in Israel.

We’re All Doomed

Edit: The question asked was if you believed that Evolution was true, not true or Not sure:

I suppose we can cheer because we not last? While Science is not incompatible with Religion, Science is incompatible with the religious belief that a supreme being puts their fingers on the scale to change laws and rules at their whim and leisure.

Unfortunately, you’ll never convince people who really believe and feel they have proof that God has a hand in our lives every moment of every day. Faith is one thing, wanting to prove faith is another, and much more dangerous thing.
