Quote for the Day

“The free exercise of religion and respect for private property are not a promising agenda for progressives.”

Bill Kristol

I didn’t know that Freedom of Religion and Respect for private property rights is no longer a constitutional point, but instead merely an agenda for progressives… wow.

Sharron Angle is Low Hanging Fruit

But sometimes even the low hanging fruit must be plucked

Nevada Republican Senate candidate Sharron Angle once partook in a campaign against a local high school’s use of black football jerseys, arguing that the dark color was ungodly and wicked, Bill Roberts of Nevada’s Pahrump Valley Times recently reported.

I really really hope she never stumbles into a goth club. Her heart would explode from fear of all the evil around her. (Well that or the clove cigarettes, which are now illegal in the US…. go figure) And I also wonder if her views of the black color extend to black people. hmmm.

And yet, she may be the next Senator from Nevada.

The Party of Stupid

I think that whistling sound is the last group of Hispanics leaving the Republican Party

I have confirmed that Brian Sandoval, as reported by Univision’s news director in a column and revealed in an earlier blog post, did indeed say that his children don’t look Hispanic when asked by the Spanish-language station whether he was worried about his kids being profiled if they were in Arizona.

Sandoval denied (twice) making the comments during an interview with “Face to Face” this week. But the comments are on videotape, I have confirmed. Univision, however, is declining to release the tape, claiming (as most media organizations would) that it is work product.

Smear someone, Get Rewarded by the RNC

Let’s see how long this one lasts

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele has a party fundraising event coming up in August that is scheduled to feature a very special guest: Conservative media activist Andrew Breitbart…

Is there any real doubt about the intimate relationship between the Republican Party and ANdrew Breitbart? Is there any doubt left that there’s a symbiotic relationship between the insanity that dwells within Breitbart and the insanity that has gripped the Republican party. and on the rare cases where the insanity doesn’t utterly win, the Republican party ends up with a bat shit crazy third part challenger or the person fighting it gets tossed out into the wilderness in the never ending quest for party purity.

I think this one can’t fly and the Republican party can’t be THAT stupid, but I’ve been wrong before.

Guess We’ll Have A Democrat Governor in Colorado

Tancredo has decided that he’s determined to stay in the spotlight and screw the Republican party over because they won’t make him their candidate for Governor

Former Congressman Tom Tancredo is in the race for Colorado governor, he said this morning.

“I will officially announce at noon that I will seek the nomination of the constitution party,” Tancredo told The Denver Post.

Rumors that John Hickenlooper ordered champagne is exaggerated.

Please?

I mean, really, Does Tancredo think people like him so much that he’s the best hope for the Republicans in Colorado and that everyone else should drop out … or else?

Ex-Rep. Tom Tancredo is throwing down the gauntlet. According to The Denver Post, Tancredo has demanded that the Republican Party’s two scandal-stained candidates, Scott McInnis and Dan Maes, drop out after the August 10 primary, so that the party can appoint another nominee. If not, Tancredo says, he’ll run as a third party candidate, “and I won’t get out.”

In the wake of the McInnis scandal, Tancredo’s name was floated by GOP members as a possible replacement. In a poll conducted after the plagiarism revelation, Colorado Republicans named Tancredo their choice for “strongest Republican gubernatorial candidate.”

I think I’d pay to see this happen.

And People Want THESE Clowns in Office?

“I think that all we should do is issue subpoenas and have one hearing after another. And expose all the nonsense that is going on.”

– Rep. Michelle Bachman (R-Mars)

Is this what you want? investigation after investigation to look up stuff like what Obama had for lunch, or if they flew first class in Air Force One, or what schools the kids go to, or whatever other thing people can gin up. Remember these are the same people who frankly admit that they don’t care about the truth, just winning.

I don’t care how much you dislike the Democrats, but compared to these clowns, I’ll take ‘em.

The Half Life for Republican Scandals is…

oh about 24 hours. Which explains why Republicans feel comfortable to thinking it’s ‘time to move on

House Republicans who condemned Rep. Joe Barton (R-Texas) and threatened to yank his position atop the Energy and Commerce Committee have backed off and will let Barton remain the party’s top lawmaker on the panel.

House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio), who rebuked Barton for his BP apology last week, told the House Republican Conference Wednesday morning in a closed door meeting that it’s time to move on.

Bonus points for having his communications secretary take the fall for Tweeting that Barton was right all along today.

and some of you still think that these bozos are better?

What’s Going on in Texas, Ctd.

Maybe this is part of the reason:

“We oppose the legalization of sodomy. We demand that Congress exercise its authority granted by the U.S. constitution to withhold jurisdiction from the federal courts from cases involving sodomy. We support legislation that would make it a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for such. We believe that the practice of homosexuality tears at the fabric of society, contributes to the breakdown of the family unit, and leads to the spread of dangerous, communicable diseases,” – the platform of the Republican Party of Texas

Why I’m surprised they even bothered to use such a nice term as Homosexuality. The spread of dangerous communicable diseases? What the hell? I mean, I know almost all the Republican Party platforms support creationism and the criminalization of Abortion. But usually they don’t dog-whistle quite that loudly.

Shooting Yourself in the Foot While it’s in Your Mouth

Ouch. I’ve seen tone deaf before, but this is a pretty spectacular WTF moment.

GOP Rep. Joe Barton of Texas — the ranking member on the House Energy Committee — made a decisive splash in his opening remarks. A staunch conservative who has a long record of backing oil industry interests, Barton apologized to BP CEO Tony Hayward for the “shakedown” the Obama White House pulled on the company. (Barton has received more than $1.5 million in campaign donations from the oil industry, according to Open Secrets, a nonpartisan watchdog group.)

What Rep Barton fails to realize is the ’shakedown’ he so eloquently talks about is really little more than a down payment to cover the incredible amount of damage done by BPs (In my opinion, criminal) negligence and utter disregard for safety that has resulted in the greatest environmental catastrophe we’ve seen in our lifetimes. This didn’t happen because BP made an honest mistake, this happened because BP was too busy cutting corners in an effort squeeze out a little more profit.

Barton probably just cut the Democrat losses in the House by a good 5 – 10 seats.

This is Bad.

Well, I suppose if you’re the daughter of caribou barbie, getting knocked up is the path to a lucrative payday:

Bristol Palin “is hitting the speakers’ circuit and will command between $15,000 and $30,000 for each appearance,” the AP reports.

“Palin was thrust into the spotlight as a pregnant teen during her mother’s unsuccessful campaign for vice president in 2008. She had son Tripp that year and has since spoken about abstinence and the challenges of life as a young single mother.”

You’re telling me people are paying Bristol money to tell people to a) not have sex, even though it’s obvious she did, and b) that being a young single mom is tough, even though she’s now earning more money than 95 percent of the rest of the country? I’d laugh, but this is simply another symptom of the decline of Conservatism and the Republican party.

The Inmates Control the Asylum Part II

And a sitting Republican Senator who scored 84 out of 100 on the conservative scale, didn’t even get placed on the primary ballot, instead 2 Tea Partiers are now on the ballot in Utah.

Three-term Sen. Bob Bennett became the first victim this year of a wave of voter anger toward Washington in a defeat that will likely send a jolt through incumbents everywhere.

When it was announced that Bennett had been eliminated from the race, a huge ovation swept through the convention hall and there were hoots and shouts of “He’s gone! He’s gone!” Other delegates hugged and tea party members waved their yellow “Do Not Tread On Me” flags.

Good luck with that. Maybe there will be a minor miracle and people in Utah won’t just blindly vote Republican. Of course, the odds of that happening are just above zero. so, we’ll have a Republican Senator who will spend all day with senatorial holds and quoting birther nonsense and conspiracy theories about the Federal Reserve.

The Inmates Control the Asylum

And the Republican party continues to push deeper and deeper into bat country:

An overwhelming majority of delegates to the Maine Republican convention tonight voted to scrap the the proposed party platform and replace it with a document created by a group of Tea Party activists.

The official platform for the Republican Party of Maine is now a mix of right-wing fringe policies, libertarian buzzwords and outright conspiracy theories.

I mean, what more can be said? It’s becoming obvious to anyone with a pulse that the Republican party has tapped into that nativist and racist undercurrent along with a dash of paranoia, and that current has taken over the soul of the party. If it wasn’t for the fact that they’re going to try to destroy the country, I wouldn’t care and make some popcorn. But they are. and they’re going to be extremely dangerous to all the freedoms that make America great. Ironically enough, they claim to be doing it in the name of freedom, it’s just unfortunate that their version o freedom, isn’t very free (both in a monetary and figurative sense).

WTF? Quote of the Day

“Don’t give this guy his Miranda rights until we find out what it’s all about. That would be a serious mistake at least until we find out as much information as we have.”

– Sen. John McCain, on Faisal Shahzad.

(HT: Politicalwire)

So, McCain now has an issue with Miranda for US citizens now. What Next McCain? Feel like giving some stress positions to people to find out what they ‘know’? How about some bamboo shoots and a few years. After all, you already confessed your war crimes, but I suppose that didn’t count. Why in the hell do you think it’ll turn out any better if we do it to others. When your positions becomes more extreme than Glenn Beck, you know you’ve really stepped outside the bounds of sanity.

You can argue Legal Gymnastics about how to treat non-citizens, but to take the next step and start judging how to treat a criminal based on their religion, or skin color pulls you even a fig leaf of debate and reveals the true desires to effectively treat anyone not white enough as second class at best.

Here’s hoping that more people will wake up and finally go, WTF?!? But really, I’m not holding my breath for about 1/3rd of the country.

Marc Ambinder hits the Nail on the Head

Maybe it’s lazy blogging, but if you’re going to read one article today, read his on how even reasonable (relatively speaking) at times Republicans are enabling the right’s flight from reality. His take down is concise, point by point, and effective.
