Word of the Day – Tenebrous (Halloween Edition)

tenebrous \TEN-uh-bruhs\ , adjective;
1. Dark; gloomy.

A Honduras Agreement… Finally

Mind you the big thing here seems to be that Congress gets to decide if Zelaya returns and that there is an agreement for all sides to accept the results of the next general election:

The power-sharing agreement reached late Thursday calls for Congress to decide whether to reinstate the leftist Zelaya. While the legislature backed his June 28 ouster, congressional leaders have since said they won’t stand in the way of an agreement that ends Honduras’ diplomatic isolation and legitimizes presidential elections planned for November.

“We are willing to be cooperative in Congress with the agreement of the negotiators,” Porfirio Lobo, a National Party lawmaker who is favored to win the Nov. 29 presidential elections, said Friday. “The best decision for Honduras will be taken.”

I guess the Supreme Court is just going to be stuck on the sidelines for this one. and Zelaya is confident he’ll be reinstated, but what will he do if congress gives him the heave ho?

Hey, How’d they get This off the Soundstage

Word of the Day – Umbrage

umbrage \UHM-brij\ , noun;
1. Shade; shadow; hence, something that affords a shade, as a screen of trees or foliage.
2. a. A vague or indistinct indication or suggestion; a hint.
3. b. Reason for doubt; suspicion.
4. Suspicion of injury or wrong; offense; resentment.

Those Firebug Trees

Well, why not? if it gives you an ecological advantage to encourage more wildfires to wipe out competing trees it makes sense on some evolutionary level:

The promotion of fire by the savanna trees increases their own abundance by limiting the establishment and growth of tree species that are better competitors for resources and that might ultimately displace the savanna trees. The research results suggest that some trees may modify or “engineer” their environment, including the characteristic fire frequencies in a landscape, to facilitate their own persistence at the expense of their competitors, Beckage said.

The research proposes a scenario for the development of savannas in landscapes that would otherwise become closed forests. Examples of savanna trees that facilitate frequent low-intensity fires include the longleaf pine and the south Florida slash pine, both of which frequently shed their needles providing fodder for wildfires. The savanna tree initially invades grassland, but by facilitating frequent fires, it limits its own density and thus prevents conversion to a forest.

Remember, We Could Always Live in England

Though, really, we’re only about a decade behind England when it comes to laws like these.

Parents are being banned from playing with their children in council recreation areas because they have not been vetted by police.

Mothers and fathers are being forced to watch their children from outside perimeter fences because of fears they could be paedophiles.

Watford Council was branded a ‘disgrace’ yesterday after excluding parents from two fenced-off adventure playgrounds unless they first undergo criminal record checks.

Game of the Week: World of Goo

Welcome back  “Game of the Week“.

This time around, the game chosen is a puzzle game…. with a twist!

World of Goo, in the simplest sense, is built around the idea of creating large structures using balls of goo.

Yes, goo.  If that seems random, wait until you play the game…

It is akin to the game Lemmings (remember that one?) where the main objective is to get a certain number of goo balls to the exit. In order to do so, you construct bridges, towers, and other structures to overcome gravity and various other hurdles such as cliffs and spikes.

It seems an unlikely candidate to subliminally teach the basic concepts of physics, doesn’t it?

Sadly, 2D Boy, announced that they would not be creating a sequel to this wonderful game.  However, they did mention the possibility of creating expansions with a number of new levels and mods released.

The game is brilliant .  To see just how brilliant World of Goo is, try it out by downloading the demo.

Firing A Cop For Just Doing His Job???

I know sometimes it seems like I like pointing out bad behavior by cops, this however is a reversal, a cop is doing his job, and the mayor doesn’t like that the cop ticketed his son, so he fires the cop…

Rowell is a new member of the five-man Stockton police force. So, last Tuesday he didn’t think twice about pulling over a driver in a small white car for avoiding a DUI stop.

“He didn’t have a driver’s license, so I issued him a citation for that,” Rowell explained.

He didn’t think twice, that is, until he handed the ticket to the court clerk.

“She looked at it and said, ‘Hey, you know you just gave the mayor’s son a ticket?’ And I said, ‘Oh, crap,’” Rowell said.

Yeah, and just to show how classy the major is

Rowell said he knew there was trouble when, about 20 minutes later, he found the chief of police in the mayor’s truck in a heated discussion. Then he said the mayor, Dan Rydalch, rolled down the window and demanded he get in his truck. When he refused, Rydalch abruptly fired him on the spot.

Just wow, I feel for the guy.

And Now for Some Good News

After all we know how beer summits won’t work, right?

Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates and Cambridge police Sergeant James Crowley were spotted at a pub in Cambridge Wednesday night.

The owner of “River Gods” told WBZ the two sat in a booth together and talked for about an hour.

Over the summer, Crowley arrested Gates for disorderly conduct while responding to reports of a possible break-in at Gates’ home. Gates accused the officer of racial profiling.

Good for them.

NASA Image Because I Can

Sometimes we need a calming space, and this is my calming space. This is another world that I wish to walk along one day.
